How to keep illustrated characters consistent

Visual consistency comes from clear references and careful review. It is not something to assume because two images share a prompt.

Build a compact character sheet

Describe silhouette, proportions, clothing, colours and distinguishing features. Keep the description brief enough to reuse. Generate a neutral reference view before attempting complex scenes, and save the reference you approve.

Change one thing at a time

When moving from a reference to a scene, keep character details stable and change the pose or setting. Ask for a small number of alternatives. Compare them side by side instead of relying on memory.

Review the details that carry identity

Look at hair, ears, hands, accessories, scale and costume details. Check that the character reads the same at thumbnail size. If an image changes an essential feature, correct it before generating the next spread.

Protect space for words

Plan text placement in advance. Leave quiet areas of the composition for captions or dialogue, and check contrast at the final reading size. Text rendered inside images may need correction or separate layout.

Save a reference, not just a finished page

Keep the character notes and selected reference images in your project. When you resume, ask ChatGPT to inspect those materials before creating a new scene. Consistency still needs human review at every stage.
