From a blank page to a first draft worth keeping

A useful first draft starts with a few decisions. You do not need to solve the entire book before you begin.

Start with a reader, not a format

Who is this for, and what should they feel or understand when they finish? A bedtime story needs a different rhythm from a family history. Write a one-sentence brief that names the reader, purpose and approximate length. Give that brief to ChatGPT before asking for prose.

Make the outline a conversation

Ask for two or three possible structures and explain what you like about each. Choose one, then work on a short sample. Reviewing a single spread or chapter is easier than revising a complete manuscript whose tone never felt right.

Separate exploration from approval

Try alternate openings and visual directions freely. When one works, say exactly what to keep. AI Publishing saves on request; a generated image or message in a conversation is not automatically part of your project library. Save your approved draft and selected materials explicitly.

Leave a useful trail for your future self

Alongside the draft, save the audience, tone, character notes, source list and next step. These notes are what make returning in a new conversation practical. A good handoff says both what is decided and what is still open.

Finish a small edition

A short complete book teaches you more than a sprawling outline. Review the export on the device your reader will use, download a copy and keep an independent backup before the project’s thirty-day storage period ends.
